This year on Aug 29, the last Monday of August, our nation will remember her heroes of long ago, men and women who fought for what they believed was our sovereign right as a people, and who braved death against all odds. Those that fight political battles are called heroes; those that fight spiritual battles are called saints. Wouldn’t it be nice if we had more heroes and more saints in our midst? A.W. Tozer in his book entitled Of God and Man, says, “The fact is that we are not today producing saints.”

Birthday anniversaries are a good time as any to look back at the last twelve months and count your blessings, and reflect on the road ahead. “We remember how He loved us.” Indeed, God loves us. And often times, God shows us His love through other people. Often during a prayer meeting, I would invite the participants to recall to mind the person who had evangelized them and who encouraged them to know God in a personal way. In my particular case, it was my Papang, the late Architect Felipe Mendoza, who prayed long and hard, and in fact pleaded with me to come to a prayer meeting where I could get to know God as my God. Today is Papang’s birthday, and I remember how he loved me.

I was asked to give a teaching on evangelization during a men’s retreat of about 150 men from Ang Ligaya ng Panginoon Community, a covenant community in the Philippines. Rather than give the traditional teaching — which I was certain that these men had heard not once, but several times already — I saw this as an opportunity to propose a new approach to the task of evangelization. Speaking to men only, I wanted to focus on the special God-given qualities and character of men, and on the specific calling of men (because they ARE men) in God’s kingdom. I entitled it “EVANGELIZING OTHER MEN“, and speak about why and how men should evangelize other men.

I would like to reflect on whether there might be a sin that has befallen all males, not necessarily in an exclusive way, but in a more incessant and more “natural” way because of what Adam (the man) did, as opposed to what Eve (the woman) did.
