EVANGELIZING OTHER MEN

September 25, 2010 by Eddie Leave a Comment

I was asked to give a teaching on evangelization during a men’s retreat of about 150 men from Ang Ligaya ng Panginoon Community, a covenant community in the Philippines.  Rather than give the traditional teaching — which I was certain that these men had heard not once, but several times already — I saw this as an opportunity to propose a new approach to the task of evangelization.  Speaking to men only, I wanted to focus on the special God-given qualities and character of men, and on the specific calling of men (because they ARE men) in God’s kingdom.  I entitled it  “EVANGELIZING OTHER MEN“, and speak about why and how men should evangelize other men.

This teaching was inspired by what I learned from two books:  Why Men Hate Going to Church, by David Murrow (Nelson Books, 2005), and Wild at Heart, by John Eldredge (Nelson Books, 2001).

The presentation is an attempt to stir men into action but admittedly is rough and raw as far as specific guidelines and how-to’s are concerned.  It is my desire that men will be moved by God to act on the basis of what He will ignite in their hearts as a result of this brief presentation.  Hopefully, we can then begin to gather stories and testimonies of how strong, manly disciples are able to successfully evangelize and recruit warriors for God’s Kingdom battle.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION / REQUIREMENTS:

  • Length:  approximately 27 minutes
  • Technical requirements:  web browser + flash player + audio headset

DISCUSSION AND REFLECTION GUIDE:

If you belong to an accountability group, like an action group, a men’s group, or a bible study group, share this with your group members, and view it together.  If you have a shepherd or a group leader, he may want to lead you in a short discussion afterwards.  I suggest the following format for the small group discussion or personal reflection:

  1. Read 1 Samuel 17.
  2. Reflect on how the discontent of David  propelled him to brave action, and inspired the army to join him in his battle.
  3. Is there any unholy/wrong situation that disturbs you?  What is the Lord telling you about this situation?
  4. How does He want you to fight THIS good fight?
  5. In what way can you use this to recruit other men  into that holy battle and in the process empower them with the Holy Spirit?

God bless you!

“I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Eph 3:18-19)
