DON’T JUST FOLLOW RULES. FOLLOW ME.

March 4, 2025 by Eddie Leave a Comment

It all started with a question. A young man — wealthy, successful, and well-respected — ran up to Jesus and asked: “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mark 10:17)

But let’s be honest. Many of us never ask THAT question. We assume we already know the answer: Go to church. Be a good person. Say our prayers. So why ask? We’re already doing what needs to be done… right? But what if Jesus is looking at you today and saying, “There’s more.”

Notice something beautiful that happens in this scene that we read in Mark 10. Marks says that when the rich young man asked his question, “Jesus looked at him and loved him.” (Mark 10:21)

He wasn’t condemning him. He wasn’t scolding him. Jesus loved him.  And because of that love, Jesus told him the truth:  “One thing you lack. Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

The young man was a good person. He obeyed the commandments. He lived a respectable life. But Jesus was calling him to something deeper.  Not just to follow rules, but to follow Him.

Peter saw this happen and asked Jesus:  “We have left everything to follow You! What about us?” (Mark 10:28)  Maybe that’s the real question we need to ask.  Not just, “What must I do?” but… “Jesus, what are You asking of me?”

Because here’s the truth: Faith isn’t just about doing the minimum. It’s about following Jesus.

Yes, following Jesus requires more than just showing up at Mass on Sundays. It means giving Him our whole lives.  It means, literally following Him, and spending time to know Him, and allowing Him to reveal to us about who God is, what He wants, and How we are to please Him in our priorities, our decisions, our hearts.

But here’s the promise: Jesus says, “No one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age… and in the age to come, eternal life.” (Mark 10:29-30)

Jesus doesn’t just ask us to give things up.  He invites us into something deeper and greater. A deeper joy. A stronger purpose. A life that truly matters.  A life that is productive not in terms of what the world measures, but in terms of godly fruitfulness as you watch how God will prosper the work of your hands.

So, let me ask you: Are you just doing the bare minimum in your faith? Or is Jesus looking at you today, with love, and saying, “There’s more.” There’s more.

My friend, are you ready to take that step?

Listen, if you received this video from a friend, it is because your friend loves you and cares for you.  It would be nice if you let your friend know that you appreciate it.  And why not use this opportunity to have an honest sincere conversation with your friend about where you are in your faith journey?
